The University of Essex 

Overview

Based in the heart of Southend-on-Sea, The University of Essex’s Southend Campus opened in 2007. The first development was the Gateway Building, a modern, state-of-the-art facility situated near to the high street in a busy town centre location. The second was a recently acquired deconsecrated church in a historical part of the town called Nelson Mews. This former church was to become the home of the university’s innovative East 15 acting school.

Overview

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (York NHSFT) provides acute services for approximately 350,000 people living in and around York. Its wider catchment area provides specialist services for around half a million people in North Yorkshire. The Trust employs over 6,000 staff and its annual turnover for the last financial year was nearly £250 million. Its main site is The York Hospital which offers a range of in and outpatient services. Coupled with five community hospitals, the Trust has over 700 beds. As part of the Government’s strategy for the NHS, York NHSFT is offering more and more community-based services, reducing the pressure on its main hospital services and providing services closer to people’s homes and workplaces.

The situation

Over the years, City of York Council (CYC) had amassed a number of different network contracts and maintenance arrangements with many different service providers. In 2008, it became clear that there was a need for a high-capacity network to connect over 100 council buildings and facilities such as schools, libraries as well as numerous sporting facilities across the city. The solution needed to be future-proofed and avoid any bandwidth limitations or costs of leased line connectivity.
