Background

Micrima is a breast imaging tech company based in the heart of Bristol.  Founded in 2006, the company’s MARIA technology uses radio waves to detect forms of cancer in younger breast tissue, making screening quicker, less painful and safer than traditional mammograms.

Challenge

When it came to moving offices in late 2016, connectivity was a key factor for Micrima when identifying a new location. An ultra-fast connection is vital to the business’s operation due to its high consumption of data through cloud sharing, Office 365, specialist developer tools and SharePoint as well as likely future product offerings such as cloud-based data analytics. This was also something they had struggled to find at an affordable cost.

The chosen location, One Glass Wharf overlooking Bristol’s waterside, provided Micrima with the flexibility to select an internet service provider of their choice. After being let down by the incumbents – both Virgin and BT Openreach deemed the modern site in the city centre unreachable – Micrima needed an ultra-fast connection, in a rapid timeframe.

Solution

Following a recommendation from another building tenant, Dr Peter Bannister, CTO at Micrima, contacted Triangle Networks about joining CityFibre’s full fibre network, which offered a 1000Mbps connection.

Aware that time was of the essence to get Micrima’s office connected in time for the move, Triangle and CityFibre pulled out all the stops during the installation phase, and activated Micrima’s gigabit connection within 13 working days.

Dr Peter Bannister said: “The entire team was incredibly helpful throughout. They understood our issues with moving office and did everything they could to get us online as soon as possible.

“After being let down repeatedly by the usual prospects, it was a breath of fresh air to work with such an enthusiastic, professional organisation.”

Now benefiting from gigabit internet speeds, Peter commented: “Radiology, in particular breast cancer imaging, is very data intensive. Some medical research projects have to leave out large amounts of data from findings as moving it can be difficult. Now thanks to our CityFibre connection, we have exceptional bandwidth that enables us to process anything we can analyse or design.”
