Nicola Sturgeon has welcomed the recent announcement that Glasgow is to benefit from CityFibre’s rollout of full fibre to homes and businesses across the city.

The rollout is underway in several sites south of the River Clyde and will build on the digital infrastructure CityFibre has deployed in the city over the last few years in partnership with Glasgow City Council.

CityFibre’s investment will help fulfil Glasgow’s bold ambition to be one of the world’s best-connected cities and represents one of Europe’s largest city-wide full fibre roll outs.

First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said: “The fact that CityFibre is making its biggest investment to date here in Scotland is effectively a vote of confidence in our approach to digital connectivity.

“Everyone should be able to access the fastest available broadband which is why this announcement by CityFibre is extremely welcome, not least for the jobs it will support. Crucially, it will help people, communities and businesses in Glasgow to access improved broadband speeds and will complement our Reaching 100% investment programme which was created to secure broadband infrastructure that benefits all of Scotland.

“This investment also comes at a crucial time during economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic which will require good digital connectivity to make sure nobody is left behind.”
